100 years ago: Eudora pastor runs afoul of the Ladies Aid Society

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 14, 1910: Some 150 members of the Grand Army of the Republic and related groups met to honor Abraham Lincoln on his birthday. There was music and it proved to be a highly commendable gathering with many fine speeches. . . . The labor unions of Lawrence are taking up the cause of the 15 girls who walked out on the S.H. Kress store for more wages and better treatment by the manager. Many are boycotting the store and the labor commissioner is considering an investigation. One major complaint was that the manager would not allow mothers wo wait inside the store on Saturday nights when many girls were afraid to go home alne in the dark. . . . Judge A.C. Smart ruled today it is not perjury to swear falsely to one’s age. There were two cases in court involving marriages of underage people and the judge said that legislation to punish them for their age listings if faulty. . . . A Eudora pastor who has criticized officials and government got into serious trouble yesterday when he criticized the Ladies Aid Society. Reaction was instant.
