Winter Olympics: briefly

More rest for Vonn

Warm, wet weather postponed Sunday’s opening women’s Alpine race. That gives favorite Lindsey Vonn more time for her badly bruised right shin to rest and heal. The women’s super-combined was put off because racers will not have had a chance to train on the course.

Torch relay rerouted

Organizers had to change the course of the torch relay because of protesters waiting as the flame entered a poor, drug-addled Vancouver neighborhood. Mounted police prevented about 150 demonstrators from confronting the relay.

Jump start

Even before the opening ceremony, ski jumping got under way. Gregor Schlierenzauer of Austria had the longest jump in qualifying for the normal hill event.

On tap today

Jenn’s job: It’s to win the women’s moguls. Canada’s Jenn Heil took the gold in that event at the 2006 Games, and she’s a favorite to repeat.

Showtime for Apolo: American Apolo Anton Ohno competes in his third Olympics when he skates in the 1,500 short-track. Ohno has won five medals.
