25 years ago: County to help fund study for Lecompton interchange

A new three-inch snowfall built up Lawrence current snow cover to more than 10 inches in most places and gave pupils in local schools an unscheduled day of vacation. A total of 30.8 inches had fallen for the winter, including November and December of 1984, double the average annual snowfall of about 15 inches. Lawrence had had snow on the ground every day since Dec. 31 and temperatures had generally been numbing. Little warmup was seen in the coming week. Local road and street crews had been pushed to the point of exhaustion time and again. The rest of the state and nation also had been belabored by the bitter wintry conditions.

Over objections of some Lecompton residents, the Douglas County Commission voted 2-1 to help finance a study that would look at site options for a new turnpike interchange west of Lawrence in the Lecompton area.

The Vietnamese government would turn over to the United States the remains of five people it says were Americans listed as missing in action, reliable sources said.

Lawrence High School’s marching band once agains was invited to the Portland, Ore., Rose Festival and members and their families were getting busy to raise a least $160,000 for the June 2-9 event.
