100 years ago: Residents decry street work as too slow

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 10, 1910: The U.S. Senate today passed a bill making Commander Robert Peary the official discoverer of the North Pole. He was made a rear admiral on the retired list. Explorer Cook says he was there first. . . . Numerous complaints have been made by persons residing on streets where the contract for the work has been let to the effect that the contractors are too slow with the work and that streets are needlessly torn up for too long. . . . Doctors noted so many fat people and point out that overeating can be as harmful as starving. . . . The high school frat boys who indicated legal action over their dismissals for membership in the outlawed groups have not made any moves in that direction. Feelings are running high, however, and most parents want nothing to do with the fraternities. . . All the girls in the S.H. Kress store joined themselves to a union this week and gave up their jobs and walked out, to the number of 15. The strike is for higher wages and for some changes in the rules of the store.
