40 years ago: Man hospitalized after allegedly taking ‘Purple Bomb’ drug derivative

Teachers, salaries and education all hung in the balance as the Kansas Legislature seemed to be “dawdling.” The sluggish process was of great concern to Lawrence school superintendent Carl Knox and the local board that wanted more data for future planning as well as current needs.

A young area man was hospitalized “in a blind stupor” and at least one attending physician here suspected the condition was produced by a drug derivative known as a Purple Bomb. It was a potentially fatal combination of LSD and strychnine. Officials said the local man could suffer “permanent damage”.
