100 years ago: City seeks health officer

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 9, 1910: Kansas will meet Missouri in the first basketball games of the season on the Robinson gymnasium court. The games will be the last ones played in Lawrence this year. The team will leave soon for an extended trip. Also, the KU freshmen are due to play the deaf and dumb mutes from the Olathe Institution. . . . A Kansas City jury returned a verdict this afternoon that Col. Thomas Swope’s death was caused by a capsule containing strychnine which was administered by Dr. B.C. Hyde, a nephew of Col. Swope. Hyde attorneys have refused to let him take the stand. . . . There appears to be competition for the job of city health officer. After Dr. Rudolph said he would serve a year at no cost, there have been several others come forward to seek the job. . . . The high school fraternity boys who were dismissed from school for their membership in the outlawed groups held a meeting and are considering legal action to contest their ousters.
