To supporters of liquor by the drink, it must have sounded like corks popping from 28 bottles of champagne. On a 28-12 vote, the Kansas Senate approved a constitutional resolution to let the voters decide whether they wanted liquor by the drink. The measure passed the Senate by only one vote more than necessary and then was to go to the House.

It had been talked about for years and the chamber of commerce resurrected new plans to build a highway bypass around the city. But the plan was being met with concerns about costs and planning from some city commissioners, who said they were caught off guard by announcement of portions of the proposal. A great many details needed to be sorted out, officials said, before anything resembling such a bypass could result.

The Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen (LINK) was to open from 1:30 to 2:30 on a Thursday in the basement of St. John’s Catholic Church. The first meal planned by the LINK committee was to be beef stew and fruit. The new food kitchen was to be open from 1:30 to 2:30 every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
