Heavy snowfall likely tonight

4 inches to 8 inches of precipitation expected

Winter in Lawrence took a break Saturday, but it’ll be back before the weekend’s over.

Temperatures have remained just above freezing, allowing much of the snow that accumulated Friday to melt away.

According to 6News Meteorologist Ed Bloodsworth, residents in the area will begin to feel the effects of the impending winter storm starting today. Snow flurries are likely throughout the day, turning to a heavier snow between 7 p.m. and midnight.

Bloodsworth said a series of weather disturbances are expected to come together, creating an accumulating amount of snowfall for a good portion of northeast Kansas.

Lawrence is expected to get from 4 to 6 inches of snow, with as many as 8 or more inches possible, he said.

The storm will make travel conditions difficult later today and Monday, with slick roads and blowing snow increasing the likelihood of accidents. The snowfall will begin to taper off Monday evening as a cold front pushes through the area. Temperatures likely will drop into single digits by Tuesday night.
