100 years ago: Haskell to remain Indian school
From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 7, 1910: From Washington comes news that Haskell Institute probably will be retained by the government as an Indian school. There are about 25 Indian schools and recently the commissioner of Indian affairs said that number should be reduced to five. At one time, it appeared that Haskell could be acquired by Kansas University and chancellor Strong was in favor of such a move. However, under current conditions, it appears Haskell will remain the same as it has been. . . . After more than a month of irregular running of street cars, the schedule has been rearranged and cars will be running every 12 minutes on Massachusetts. The Indiana Street line also was started the past Saturday night. There were many problems with the power weakened by the ice jams n the river but things seem to getting back to normal now. . . . “Here you will find gas in quantities and probably oil, said an experienced “gas witch” as he located a spot on the Charles Johnson farm three fourths of a mile northeast of Vinland. Johnson has a lease on the land and says work could begin in 60 days. This field looks as promising as one found near Eudora.
