Lawrence voters were to decide on April 2 whether to increase taxes to fund half of a proposed $1 million recreational complex at Holcom Park. The city commission placed the issue on the ballot after discussing financial options for the proposed 17,465-square-foot complex planned near Lawrence Avenue and 27th Street. If the city would pay half the cost, a steering committee supporting the project planned to raise the ther $500,000 privately.

Supporters of Haskell Indian Junior College went to Capitol Hill and told federal officials that the 100-year-old college could survive another century, but only with a change in governance. A major goal was to give Haskell’s National Board of Regents more power to establish a “more traditional institution.” There was concern that the “absentee” Bureau of Indian Affairs had too much to say about the school was run.

Kansas Senate leaders said they thought they had enough votes to pass a liquor by the drink bill after a wide range of compromises on the issue.
