City says odd taste of water due to large amount of runoff into Clinton Lake

Changes in the aquatic environment at Clinton Lake have produced an odd taste in the city water at several west Lawrence residences, city officials confirmed Friday.

The taste — some describe it as a cucumber taste, while others label it as fishy — is not a health hazard, said Megan Gilliland, a spokeswoman with the city. But city crews are working to eliminate the taste and are hopeful that it will disappear this weekend.

Gilliland said the large swings in temperature and the large amount of runoff entering Clinton Lake has changed the conditions of the lake water that the city treats in its west Lawrence treatment plant.

City crews have responded by making adjustments in their filtering processes, and also have been using the city’s Kaw Water Treatment Plant to provide a larger share of the city’s overall water supply. Water coming from the Kaw plant has not been experiencing the taste problems.
