City says odd taste of water due to large amount of runoff into Clinton Lake

February 5, 2010

Changes in the aquatic environment at Clinton Lake have produced an odd taste in the city water at several west Lawrence residences, city officials confirmed Friday.

The taste — some describe it as a cucumber taste, while others label it as fishy — is not a health hazard, said Megan Gilliland, a spokeswoman with the city. But city crews are working to eliminate the taste and are hopeful that it will disappear this weekend.

Gilliland said the large swings in temperature and the large amount of runoff entering Clinton Lake has changed the conditions of the lake water that the city treats in its west Lawrence treatment plant.

City crews have responded by making adjustments in their filtering processes, and also have been using the city’s Kaw Water Treatment Plant to provide a larger share of the city’s overall water supply. Water coming from the Kaw plant has not been experiencing the taste problems.

For some reason that bad taste has been more prevalent that past couple of years.

So what exactly is the city doing to the water to erase the bad taste?

How about some detail please?

They are adding some atrazine to return the taste to normal.

All run-off should go around a "roundabout" before entering the lake.

Maybe they should filter it through the haskell indian swamp. That would be an all-natural fix that our hippie community could rally behind while licking frogs.

Glad I live on the river water side. I don't want funky water.

Not many hippies in West Lawrence Liberty.

False, Consumer1. They are putting in a round-about, that will fix all of our ills, odd water taste, economy, too much snow, too little snow, somehow Sue Hack will get some of the negative karma she's generated, Bush and Obama will see get the point.

I know, as I was writing it I couldn't tell if I was being funny or serious, but honestly, the funky taste always comes from the lake water. In the summer, they have the algae blooms that taste horrible.

should that state be working on banning K2 or fixing your water ?

Adrienne Sanders 8 years, 3 months ago

Great, they'll "fix" it and then it'll taste like bleach again. Thank god for my Brita filter.

Saying the run off is the reason for the taste it makes sense, but it certainly sounds like an excuse given by some overpaid person from management that does not do much more other then try and figure out ways to be more efficient, but instead they make simple things ironically much more difficult. I don't care how you do the math 2+2=4. It's just a matter of how you want to get there. Seriously though people be thankful for the water we do get, it is a lot better then most cities and if you knew how some of the people are treated in the Dept. that provide us with water you would be grateful that they still take pride in providing us with an essential for daily life. I am not saying the water here in Lawrence is the best but the people that make our water here do truly care and they do their best. It is easy to sit around and complain about things, but like at any job you can only do the best with you what you have. The jokes about round-abouts and what not, I love them, they are hysterical. We are in troubling times right now, but the city has money to spend money on things that by looking at the comments we all feel unaminously that they are ridiculous.
