Smashburger is bringing its made-to-order burgers, flash-fried vegetables and rosemary-and-garlic-seasoned fries to Lawrence this spring.
The Denver-based chain, now with 47 locations, will open its restaurant in a building now under construction in the new Bauer Farm development, at the northeast corner of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive.
Smashburger already has locations in Wichita and nearby Derby, and more are in the works, including one in Manhattan this spring and two in Overland Park this summer.
The restaurants also sell chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and salads, plus ice cream floats, shakes and malts, and bottled beers and wines by the glass. Additional items aim to meet regional tastes, such as the “Shocker Smashburger” in Wichita and “Husker Smashburger” — including onions and mushrooms, not corn — in Nebraska.
Areios LLC, which is franchising Smashburger restaurants in the Kansas City area, will own the Lawrence store.

Smashburger is really good but rather expensive.

Has anyone had their food before, any good? Kind of sounds like that Dempsey's in that it is a bit more gourmet that say Burger King.

With all of this "new urbanism" one would think a new restaurant would be more up scale. Lawrence has a sister city in Germany but no German restaurant.
Hope this place is a smashing success. The high school kids will love it and won't have to cross 6th to McDonalds.
It is after all, all about the kids.

What will make it even more expensive is the 1% special sales tax imposed on customers who shop in Bauer Farms.

SmashBurger is ok but it's no Five Guys Burgers and Fries!

Smashburger's fries are top-notch. Their BBQ, bacon & cheese burger is also very good.

Funny how burger joints are opening up in a recession with higher prices.
oneeye_wilbur 3 years, 3 months ago
hope the place has sustainable wrappers and soft drink cups, as they are littered on the way back to Free State. don't fret the 1%, anyone who eats out doesn't mind the extra tax. when will Burger King in Lawrence start serving beer?

oneeye, there is a BK on 6th st (by Ray's) that has live country and western music on Mondays (think it is Mons). Bet it would be ahoot and a holler for a Eudorian such as yourself. And golly gee, you can even bring your hotdog and its stand.
hootin' and hollerin' for ole wilbur

Smashburger is gonna get smashed by dempsy's.

The location suggests they are looking to the HS crowd for a lot their business. I seriously doubt folks who live east of Iowa are going to drive there.

Bauer Farms is having problems signing up tenants because the retail market in Lawrence is over loaded. Banana Republic said no.... so I heard.

What we really need is an In-N-Out Burger. And a Waffle House.

Welcome to Lawrence. I will give it a try and wait to snipe and whine if something merits it.

I'm guessing they won't cut in on Dempsey's business, being so distant, but maybe on that other place... what's it called, with the annoying commercials.... oh yes, Spangles!

WE DO NEED A WAFFLE HOUSE CAUSE I HAVE TO GO TO KANSAS CITY JUST FOR LATE NIGHT BREAKFAST. AMD WHAT-A-BURGER WHERE ARE THEY ?

"Smashburger is really good but rather expensive."
Two words: Backyard Burgers. Backyard had a great location and couldn't make it. If this recession doesn't end ASAP, this place won't make it 12 months.
OldEnuf2BYurDad 3 years, 3 months ago
What is it? Hubris? I mean, did they think that the failure of Backyard Burgers was a non-issue in their decision to come to Lawrence? Surely they were aware of what happened, and the fact that Five Bros. isn't doing that well.
oneeye_wilbur 3 years, 3 months ago
Gosh, I just missed Backyard. That's a shame. Well, the mother probably got tired of working there. Those were hard working folks in that place. But it was not in a good location actually. It would have done better on E 23rd or N. Lawrence, not now with the detour and streets torn up.
As for the new place, it is banking on the high school. That whole area of "development, poorly designed as it is" is a nightmare to get in and out of. When those shops and living are built where one can live and work and die in the same "neighborhood' are built, business will thrive., well, maybe.
Retail works on loans, they don't work on cash. They borrow to keep operating and commercial loans are harder and harder to get. The banks are sitting on money but their books look good if there are not many loans to be questionable by auditors.
Expect to see some more closures downtown.
It's about location, location, location, density of population, a simple menu. In and Out figured that out. 3 In and Outs in this town would kill off most all of the hamburger joints around.

I am surprised that the health conscious and the anti smoker and the sustainability crowd in Lawrence havn't run off burger joints. AFter all, who wants burger joints in utopia?
75x55 3 years, 3 months ago
Good grief - this town loves its heart-attack foods, doesn't it?

BK says "absentee owners" everytime I go there.

"merrill (Anonymous) says… Bauer Farms is having problems signing up tenants because the retail market in Lawrence is over loaded. Banana Republic said no…. so I heard."
It's not that the retail market is overloaded merrill, it's that it was on hold until Walmart got built (something your people in power delayed for 5 years). Lots of carrying costs for expensive property creates high dollar rents. Thank your people.
Banana Republic is owned by the Gap these days and the Gap has been hit hard by the recession nationwide.

Commercial loans are getting harder to come by. And with the Obamanation wanting to unfarly tax banks to pay off GM's loans, they will get harder and more expensive to come by.

Smashburger just hasn't been the same since their album "Smashburger" went gold. "Get the Picture?" was disappointing, although I liked "You Are My Number One."
And their Christmas Album was good, too.
