100 years ago: Rugby proposed for KU

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 3, 1910: In Washington, a resolution to investigate the increases in the cost of living was introduced by Sen. Lodge of Massachusetts. A select committee of five is scheduled to conduct the investigation. Farmers are especially upset by their costs of doing business. . . . The board of regents of the university says it wants the game of rugby adopted here even though many believe it is too rough and brutal. . . . Lawrence Republicans say they were not pleased with the bad politics that occurred during Kansas Day in Topeka. Several officials have scorched reactionaries they believe are harming the party and the state. . . . Chancellor Strong is hot on the trail of the fraternity Theta Nu Epsilon, making inquiries and handing out lists of suspects he believes are involved in the group after it was kicked out of the university. The group has been banned sincce 1907 when it stages a disgusting feast of drunkenness. The board of regents is strongly backing the chancellor in combatting the outlaw group. He has warned that action will be taken against those involved in a party TNE is now planning.
