Sexual assaults and DUIs increased significantly in Lawrence in 2009

Significantly more sexual assault and driving under the influence cases were reported in Lawrence in 2009 than in the year prior, according to crime statistics released by police.

Lawrence police recorded 163 sexual assaults last year — including rapes, sodomy and other sex crimes — compared with 138 in 2008. That’s an 18 percent jump.

The number of driving under the influence cases in the city jumped 25 percent, from 491 in 2008 to 612 in 2009.

Overall, crime in the city stayed more or less steady, with 15,612 total crimes recorded, a jump of just three dozen crimes more than in 2008.

There were no murders in 2009, compared with four in 2008, and the number of robberies stayed equal, with 89 each year.

Compared with 2007, overall crime was down 7 percent in 2009. In 2007, 16,710 crimes were reported, including 177 sexual attacks, 489 DUIs and 78 robberies.
