Firebirds’ boys bowling takes first

? The Free State High boys bowling team placed first, while the girls finished third out of four teams on Monday at the Leavenworth-Baker Invitational.

The tournament was scored with the Baker system, a team format where more than one bowler comprises the score of a game. The leadoff bowler, for instance, rolled the first and sixth frame; the second bowler had the second and seventh frame, and so on. Five bowlers contributed to the team score.

“Both squads did well,” Free State coach Anita Carlson said. “The boys really did well. They only lost one match. They were a dominating force. It’s more of a fun thing for us than anything else (Baker format). They enjoy it because it’s a team thing.”

Free State will play host to K.C. Turner at 3:30 p.m. today at Royal Crest Lanes.
