25 years ago: Former KU athletic director dies

A.C. “Dutch” Lonborg, internationally known as a Kansas Unversity athlete and administrator and former Northwestern University basketball coach, died at his home here after a bout with cancer. He was 86. He was a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, the Kansas and Helms Foundation Halls of Fame and other topnotch honor groups as a four-letter athlete at KU, a basketball coach and KU’s athletic director from 1950 to 1966. He had been instrumental along with Phog Allen in establishing the NCAA basketball championship tournament, first played in 1939.

A KU committee released its recommendations for the university’s first-ever set of core academic requirements for undergraduates. A three-year study had gone into the proposal that was to apply to all undergradutes. The University Council was now going to study the program before it could go into effect.

Balmy recent weather was due to drop to the 10-15-degree range for several days.

The nation’s civilian jobless rate rose to 7.4 percent in January from 7.2 in December.

A Lawrence company under investigation by state officials offered to place $75,000 in escrow to cover the company’s investors. However, a representative of the Kansas attorney general’s office said $75,000 was not enough to cover Cul;ture Farms Inc. investments in the state. There was talk of a Ponzi scheme.
