Freak winter thunderstorm brings ice, lightning to Lawrence

12 p.m. As of noon, the winter weather advisory for Douglas County has been canceled.

According to the National Weather Service, this is the first thunderstorm to hit Lawrence on New Year’s Eve since at least 1996. The weather service was unable to say whether there had been thunderstorm on New Year’s Eve before then because its records do not go back any further.

9:30 a.m. update According to the National Weather Service, no additional winter accumulation is expected, though some winter precipitation may continue until noon.

The latest road conditions from the Kansas Department of Transportation list most highways in the county, including K-10, U.S. 59, U.S. 40, U.S. 56 and the South Lawrence Trafficway as party snowpacked/icy. Crews from KDOT moved through the county about 5:30 this morning.

The Kansas Turnpike is still listed as completely snowpacked/icy.

City of Lawrence crews have been out treating streets and have treated most arterial streets at least once. Crews continue to treat secondary and tertiary roads.

Drivers and pedestrians are still encouraged to use caution this morning, as untreated surfaces, especially parking lots and sidewalks, remain slick.

7:30 a.m. update It looks like most of the precipitation has moved out of the area, but the winter weather advisory is still in effect until noon today.

Although the storm has passed, roads remain icy and slick. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that about 65 percent of roads were icy and that crews are still out treating the roads.

Wind chills will range from near zero to minus 10 tonight and into Saturday morning.

4:45 a.m. update A line of severe weather has started moving through the Lawrence area.

With it comes thunder, lightning and ice pellets. A fairly thick layer of ice pellets is covering most surfaces outside and drivers are urged to use caution when they head out this morning.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority reported icy conditions along its entire route from Emporia to Kansas City. It said crews were out treating the surface, but urged drivers to use caution.

KDOT had not yet started treating roads in Douglas County, as of 5 a.m.

2:30 a.m. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Lawrence through noon Friday.

According to the NWS, precipitation will start overnight and continue through Friday morning, accumulating between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Both snow and sleet are expected throughout the state.
