25 years ago: 100 cases of Budweiser stolen from beverage company

December 30, 2010

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 30, 1985:

  • Police had their eyes open for a large New Year’s Eve bash after a burglary at McDonald Beverage Inc. The items stolen from a railroad boxcar beside the business, located at 801 E. Ninth, included 100 cases of Budweiser beer in 12-ounce cans and three cases containing quart bottles of Busch. Police noted that although the theft did not empty the boxcar, the amount stolen would have fit neatly into the bed of a pickup truck.
  • The Kansas Turnpike Authority announced a 5 percent toll increase for passenger cars, beginning after midnight on this date. It was the first increase in five years. The new rate from the West Lawrence interchange to the eastern terminal in Kansas City was $1.10; to East Topeka, 70 cents; to South Topeka, 80 cents. The toll for the entire 236-mile length of the turnpike, from Kansas City to Wellington, was increased 25 cents to $6.25.
