Police have auto theft suspect in custody

Lawrence Police have a suspect in custody in connection with a Tuesday evening automobile theft, according to information from emergency dispatchers.

Police stopped a stolen 1995 Toyota Tercel in the 2700 block of West 24th Terrace around 11 p.m. The male suspect fled on foot and was later located by police near Holcomb Park.

An officer on scene reported that the suspect had been listening to the police pursuit on a radio. Police said that they would take the suspect in for an interview and compare the suspect to video surveillance obtained from Checkers Grocery Store, 2300 La., where the car was reported stolen around 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

Berg, I think it's still permissible to say "white" when referring to someone's race.
just you better not mention the other politically incorrect racial identities.

It certainly IS permissible to use the word, "white," as long as it carries with it a deep loathing and national sense of shame. Being politically correct in today's climate is a sense of empowering all sorts of different things, all the while scorning "white." sigh......... Yes, Demolibs, I know it is our duty to be ashamed of ourselves.

Anyone can read about this in the paper.

Real Americans would grab their 44 Magnums and rush to the scene to help the police find the alleged car thief.

The question you have to ask yourself is, "Am I a real American?"

JM- you are so right. I had no idea how bad it was until I started listening to my scanner. Cops did a great job tonight, and the stolen car was recovered, with the keys! Yay!

They should not mention ANY race unless they are asking the public to help them identify the suspect, and then they should list race age range and physical statistics.

At the time, the suspect was at large. There was nothing wrong with describing them. If they are white, they are white; if they are black, they are black, etc.

--well said. if suspectis at large, whatever info the pd feels it can release should be put out by th paper, not just to help with locating him/her/it, but for people's safety.

Apparently, it's just fine to use the racial slur "white" to define a suspect. I prefer Caucasian and am actually of native and eastern European descent. It's almost comical if it weren't such a marker of our times and our town in specific. I think all Caucasian criminals should object to the LJWorld making it more difficult for them to get away. After all, Race is omitted from stories where the suspect is any other ethnicity. Those damn double standards of Journalistic Integrity just bite you in the butt every time. Isn't it awful when we can't remember who it's OK to hate?

Bottom line is, when it comes to criminal action, race as part of a description of a criminal at large is not only "politically" correct, it's necessary. But the editors at the LJWorld believe us all to be stupid and panicky, unable to handle such information. If they told us what a dangerous person looked like, we would undoubtedly form angry mobs, roaming the streets, beating up anyone who matched the description. It would be total anarchy. Better lie to us all...
