25 years ago: Lawrence shoppers report their Christmas Eve successes

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 25, 1985:

On the previous evening, Lawrence store managers had reported that business was good, although a bit slower than previous days, as the city’s 11th-hour shoppers stormed downtown for last-minute gifts. One shopper said that he had a system – he’d walk into a store, as a clerk to show him something nice, and then buy it. Another shopper said that he always waited until the very last day to do his shopping. “It’s generally been my experience that it’s not very crowded. Everybody’s always done,” he said. In spite of the stores being out of stock on some requested items, most shoppers seemed to be happy with their purchases. “Once you get in the mood to blow money, it’s easy,” said one man.
