25 years ago: Lawrence post office clerk impersonates St. Nick

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 24, 1985:

  • Santa Claus – or rather, one of his look-alike helpers – was helping out behind the counter of the Lawrence post office at 647 Vermont. Tim Wales, the postal clerk behind the beard, had been dressing the part for the past three years. “I usually just do it for a couple of hours in the morning,” he said. “The suit gets too warm after that.” Jack Harris, Lawrence postmaster, reported that volume was up about 12 percent and that the local post offices had handled more than three million pieces of mail since Thanksgiving.
  • In the presence of 13,600 fans, Kansas University basketball coach Larry Brown celebrated 100 collegiate basketball victories with a win against George Washington U., 94-71, in Allen Fieldhouse. Brown had already racked up over 400 victories as a professional coach.
