25 years ago: Warm Hearts raises funds in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 23, 1985:

  • The Lawrence Warm Hearts fundraising efforts had run into an unexpected mystery. After learning that someone had been making unofficial door-to-door solicitations for the organization, committee head Jessie Branson had notified the Lawrence police that the solicitation was unauthorized, as Warm Hearts did not raise funds through door-to-door efforts. A few days later, she was contacted by a resident of Jayhawker Towers who had found an envelope containing several checks made out to Warm Hearts. The resident claimed no knowledge of the origin of the envelope.
  • Kansas University officials were planning to unveil architectural drawings for the new science library. The four-story, $13.9 million structure was to be constructed on a hillside behind Hoch Auditorium.
  • Several area department stores, including Gibson’s, K-Mart, and Litwin’s, were planning to stay open late on Christmas eve for last-minute shoppers.
