25 years ago: Proposed legislation would remove Haskell from BIA jurisdiction
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 21, 1985:
- Rep. Jim Slattery, D-Kan., had introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would remove Haskell Indian Junior College from the jurisdiction of the Department of Interior. The school was operating under the control of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and its regents were operating solely in an advisory capacity. The legislation would establish a corporation to be run by an autonomous board of regents. Haskell would continue to rely on federal funds, but would also be allowed to use private funds.
- For the third year in a row, the Flamingo Club in North Lawrence was offering a free dinner to “all senior citizens, the underprivileged or anyone who will be alone on Christmas Day.” The meal was to include roast beef, turkey, and ham. In addition, the LINK kitchen was to maintain its regular schedule of free meals in the basement of St. John’s Catholic Church, and the Lawrence Jaycees were scheduled to deliver food baskets to feed more than 100 people over the holiday.
