100 years ago: No white Christmas in store for Lawrence; recent election outcome blamed
From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 21, 1910:
- “Lawrence will have to content itself without a ‘white’ Christmas. According to J. C. Evans, the local weather observer, there will be no moonlight sleigh rides for Lawrence young people on Christmas eve. While this will be a great disappointment to the small boys who have written Santa Claus for a sled, there seems to be little hope for them. The weather man’s opinion is based upon the lack of moisture in the atmosphere. While he does not say so, it is believed that the sinister influence of the re-election of a democratic sheriff in Douglas county is holding up the moisture without which there can be no Christmas snow.”
- “A ring, a ruby, a diamond were taken from Gustafson’s store this morning, the absence being immediately discovered. If same are returned before Christmas no questions will be asked, if not warrant will be sworn out for the guilty parties.”
- “In order to determine the sentiment towards Monday [Dec. 26] closing, a World man visited a dozen of the leading stores in Lawrence this morning. Without exception the merchants favored a holiday providing someone would take the initiative. A. D. Weaver has already promised his force a holiday.”
