From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 20, 1970:

• “Turmoil and disruptive events” occurring recently in Lawrence were cited as factors of concern for officials of West Co., a plastics manufacturing firm, who had been considering opening a $3-$4 million plant in Lawrence. The vice president and general manager of the plastics division of the company said that there was now “nothing definite” about continuing the project.
• Freezing drizzle was causing hazardous driving conditions in the Lawrence area. Three cars are pictured piled up near 13th and Louisiana. Several of the streets leading up to Mt. Oread were barricaded shortly afterwards to prevent more accidents on the hilly streets.
• President Nixon had been presented with a compromise antipollution bill by Congress which set Jan. 1, 1975, as the target date for 90 per cent reduction of emissions from new car exhausts. The bill’s chief congressional sponsor said that the measure promised “clean air to breathe in the 1970s,” but critics said that it could shut down the auto industry.
