Leavenworth woman’s petition stops city from selling park

? A Leavenworth woman’s effort to save a city park has succeeded.

Debra-Bates Lamborn began a petition drive to stop the city from selling a small park in downtown Leavenworth. After the petition was determined to have enough valid signatures, the city commission voted Tuesday to keep and maintain the property.

Commissioners had decided in October to accept bids for the property, which includes a fountain and park bench.

Bates-Lamborn, who runs a business across the street from the park, told The Leavenworth Times that she’s been visiting the green space for 18 years and didn’t want to lose it.

Mayor Larry Dedeke said he thought it would cost more to have a special election than to it would to keep and maintain the property.
