25 years ago: LMH experiencing higher admissions, birth rates

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 18, 1985:

  • As expected, Lawrence city commissioners had split 3-2 in favor of pursuing a proposal to establish a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases. Mike Amyx and Ernest Angino were opposed to the proposal.
  • Business was brisk at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. It had been announced at the LMH board of trustees’ meeting that the hospital would add 15 employees to its nursing staff. Hospital admissions had been 4 percent above budget in the previous month, with 521 adult admissions and 87 newborns.
  • Icy road conditions were being blamed for a seven-vehicle pileup at the intersection of Sunnyside Avenue and Sunflower Road on the Kansas University campus. A car had attempted to stop at the intersection, and the vehicles behind the car had been unable to stop. No one was injured in the accident.
