100 years ago: Students celebrate holidays

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 18, 1910:

  • Half the school patrons of Lawrence bundled children into crisply clean clothes yesterday and accompanied them to the ward schools where the annual Christmas exercises were held. The other half who remained at home missed some most excellent programs and gaily decorated school rooms which reflected typically the Christmas cheer
  • No one who is honest can say that prohibition has hurt Kansas. During the past decade while Missouri has been inviting the rum soaked veterans of every state to come within her borders to help themselves, the state has barely held her own in population, while in Kansas where there is the best enforcement of the law that has ever been given in a prohibition state there has been an increase of fifteen per cent in population…. Kansas is a leader in many ways and best of all in the high class of citizenship, now largely composed of young men and women who have never lived in a town with an open saloon
