Alumni Wayne and Joan Anderson leave $264,000 estate gift to be used for KU scholarships

A $264,000 estate gift from Kansas University alumni Wayne and Joan Anderson will create a new KU scholarship.

Wayne Anderson earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1942, and Joan Anderson received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 1941. The couple spent their later years in Englewood, Colo., after living several places during Wayne’s career with ExxonMobil. Joan died in 2004 and Wayne died earlier this year.

The money is not designated for any particular group of students, and will be available for unrestricted scholarships.

The couple, who had three children, married soon after leaving KU. Wayne worked for Phillips 66 in Texas, volunteered for the Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater during the Battle of Okinawa.

Joan learned the languages and customs of the many places the couple lived, and became interested in working with the blind. She transcribed books in Braille for the Library of Congress.
