California man sentenced to prison for transporting 700 pounds of marijuana through Kansas

December 16, 2010

— A 69-year-old California man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for transporting 700 pounds of marijuana through Kansas.

Prosecutors say John McCollum of San Francisco pleaded guilty to transporting marijuana across state lines.

He was stopped by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper in November 2009 on Interstate 70 in Wabaunsee County while driving a rental truck pulling a trailer.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Topeka says McCollum told the patrolman he was one the way from San Francisco to South Carolina. A search of the truck turned up 720 pounds of pot.

McCollum was sentenced Tuesday.

That is pretty funny but the article needs more info. Why was the truck searched? You can't just pull someone over and look through their vehicle without a warrant. What was the probable cause?

Such an absurd and ridiculous law. And, what a silly thing to from California by way of Kansas with that much reefer. And what a scum bag prosecutor. May he/she burn in hell. Lump of coal in the stocking....all that....

and remember folks, you only get 6 months for a drunk driving hit and run that ends with a fatality. 2 years for 700lbs of pot vs 6 months for killing someone while drunk and then leaving the scene, are these fair and just sentences?
