Topeka Zoo zebra exhibit to close for improvements

The Topeka Zoo plans to close its zebra exhibit this week and send its two zebras to Canada.

Zoo director Brendan Wiley says the closing will allow the zoo to improve its facilities and animal collection.

Shani and Kitwo, the zoo’s two adult common zebras, will be moved to move to a facility in Cambridge, Ontario in Canada. Flint, a foal born at the zoo in June 2009, was placed in September at a facility in Texas.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Tuesday that Wiley says the design and location of the zebra exhibit needed improvements.

Wiley says the zoo plans to improve or replace the current zebra exhibit with a different species of zebra or a rare species of antelope.
