Metrodome won’t be ready for Vikings’ Monday Night Football game vs. Giants

The owner of the Metrodome says repairs to its snow-damaged roof won’t be ready in time for the Vikings home game next Monday night against the Chicago Bears.

Members of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities said Tuesday that inspectors found damage from the weekend’s blizzard was worse than initially thought.

The University of Minnesota is clearing snow from its TCF Bank Stadium as a likely spot for the game, which Vikings officials say they want to play in Minnesota.

Steelers’ Miller set to return

Pittsburgh — Steelers tight end Heath Miller has passed his post-concussion neurological tests and will return to practice Wednesday.

Miller sustained the first concussion of his career Dec. 5 on a hit by Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain. McClain was not penalized, but later was fined $40,000 by the NFL.

Miller didn’t play against Cincinnati, but coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday he is set to go against the Jets (9-4) on Sunday.

In other NFL news:

— The Washington Redskins have cut the holder who mishandled the extra point attempt in the one-point loss to Tampa Bay.

The Redskins on Tuesday waived punter Hunter Smith and replaced him with Sam Paulescu, who takes over as both punter and holder.

— The Philadelphia Eagles have signed two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Derrick Burgess to replace injured rookie Brandon Graham.

Burgess, originally drafted by the Eagles in 2001, returned to Philadelphia on Tuesday after being out of the NFL this season. He was released by New England before the season.

— Tackle Vernon Carey has been placed on injured reserve by the Miami Dolphins, who signed receiver Kevin Curtis.

— The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and linebacker Quincy Black on injured reserve. Defensive end George Johnson and linebacker Tyrone McKenzie were promoted from the practice squad to fill the roster spots.

— Buffalo Bills receiver Lee Evans was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Tuesday, two days after sustaining a sprained ankle in Buffalo’s win over Cleveland.

Broncos CB could get life sentence

Englewood, Colo. — Denver Broncos rookie cornerback Perrish Cox faces up to life in prison if convicted of sexual assault charges filed by prosecutors last week.

A portion of the case unsealed by a Douglas County judge Tuesday shows the sexual assault charges are Class 3 and Class 4 felonies, which carry a sentence of between two years to life in prison. They involve a helpless victim.

Rivera, Yanks finalize deal

New York — Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees have finalized their $30 million, two-year contract.

The 41-year-old closer receives $15 million in each of the next two seasons, with $1.5 million each year deferred with no interest. The deferred money will be paid in $1 million annual installments starting in 2013.

The Yankees also reached a preliminary agreement with catcher Russell Martin and agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Mark Prior, a deal that potentially could reunite him with former Chicago Cubs teammate Kerry Wood.

Navarro, Dodgers agree

Los Angeles — Free-agent catcher Dioner Navarro agreed Tuesday to a $1 million, one-year contract with the Dodgers, bringing him back for a second stint in Los Angeles.

Navarro played for the Dodgers for parts of two seasons before being traded to Tampa Bay in June 2006.

In other baseball news:

— The A’s and free agent slugger Hideki Matsui finalized a $4.25 million, one-year contract Tuesday after he passed a physical. The sides had agreed to terms during the weekend. Matsui can earn an additional $100,000 in bonuses.

— Free-agent first baseman Lyle Overbay reached a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, returning to the NL after five seasons with Toronto.

— The Cincinnati Reds have officially announced right fielder Jay Bruce’s six-year contract. The deal Tuesday is said to be worth $51 million. The contract includes a club option for the 2017 season.

— Free-agent catcher Gerald Laird and the St. Louis Cardinals have reached agreement on a $1 million, one-year contract.

Iowa to review drug-testing policies

Iowa City, Iowa — The University of Iowa says it is reviewing its drug testing policies for student-athletes in the wake of star receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos’s arrest last week.

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta says some “flaws and inconsistencies” have been found in the policies and some athletes have likely gotten around drug tests in the past.

UConn adds 7-foot-1 center

Hartford, Conn. — No. 4 Connecticut has added 7-foot-1 center Enosch Wolf to the men’s basketball roster.

Wolf, from Goettingen, Germany, committed to the Huskies in July. He graduated high school in Germany, but had been taking classes and playing basketball this fall at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, a prep school in Wilbraham, Mass.
