40 years ago: KU students serenade Lawrence police officers with Christmas carols

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1970:

  • The following “complaint” was filed in the Saturday log of the Lawrence Police Department: “A group of 12 to 15 males and females came to the P.D. and proceeded to sing Christmas carols for approximately 10 minutes. Subjects appeared to be college age. Unknown if they can be recognized again. In a job where one is constantly exposed to bitterness and hatred, sorrow and tragedy, these young people provided a refreshing respite. God bless them and Merry Christmas to them.” It was signed by four grateful police officers – Sgt. Charles Greer, Det. Mike McCaffrey, Ptm. Dave Reade, and Disp. Jim Gillihan.
  • Arden Booth, Lawrence businessman and farmer, had been named to fill the unexpired term of Republican Lt. Gov.-elect Reynolds Shultz in the Kansas Senate. The official appointment was to be made by Gov. Robert Docking, but the governor was directed by state law to appoint the choice of the party convention.
  • It was announced that donations to the Vespers Scholarship Fund at the recent event at Kansas University had totaled $702.50. The money was to be used for awards to students in the School of Fine Arts.
