Hearing for wounded veteran accused of targeting members of Westboro Baptist Church delayed until January
Wichita ? A key hearing has been delayed for a wounded veteran accused of targeting members of a Kansas church that protests at soldiers’ funerals.
Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert set Jan. 20 as the date for the preliminary hearing for 26-year-old Ryan Newell of Marion.
Newell was charged earlier this month with felony conspiracy to commit aggravated assault related to firearms that were put in his vehicle and taken to a place where church members gathered. He also faces five misdemeanor counts after allegedly following members of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church from a protest at a Mulvane school to Wichita City Hall.
Newell had a rifle and two pistols when he was arrested in the city hall parking garage.
