Men turn selves in after fleeing truck-train crash in Topeka

? Two men who were seen running from a pickup truck moments before the vehicle was hit by a train have turned themselves in.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office says the men claim they were looking for a restroom along the tracks, near Interstate 70, late Friday afternoon when their vehicle became stuck.

A Union Pacific Railroad crew member on the train said he saw two people run from the truck just before it was struck. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports authorities searched the area Friday night but did not find the vehicle’s occupants.

Sheriff’s spokesman Brad Jones says the men contacted investigators Saturday and said they had been worried about getting into trouble, so they ran off.

Jones says his office will recommend the men be charged with criminal trespassing.
