— Two men who were seen running from a pickup truck moments before the vehicle was hit by a train have turned themselves in.

The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office says the men claim they were looking for a restroom along the tracks, near Interstate 70, late Friday afternoon when their vehicle became stuck.

A Union Pacific Railroad crew member on the train said he saw two people run from the truck just before it was struck. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports authorities searched the area Friday night but did not find the vehicle's occupants.

Sheriff's spokesman Brad Jones says the men contacted investigators Saturday and said they had been worried about getting into trouble, so they ran off.

Jones says his office will recommend the men be charged with criminal trespassing.

At least they were bright enough to get out of the truck before Mr. Choo Choo smashed it into the middle of next week.

Sounds like they waited long enough to sober up before turning themselves in. The driver probably figured it was just a matter of time before they caught up with him--assuming it was his vehicle and not a stolen one.

Looking for a restroom? Unless they were actually up to some criminal mischief, they were more likely using the great outdoors as a restroom and either thought it was funny to park on the tracks or were too oblivious to realize that that's where they stopped.

"the men claim they were looking for a restroom along the tracks,"

I don't think I've ever seen a restoom along the railroad tracks. But maybe it's because I wasn't looking for one!

"they had been worried about getting into trouble,"

Well yes, duh.
