Tulsa University athletic director Bubba Cunningham and Notre Dame deputy AD Bill Scholl were the two finalists sent to Kansas University Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little by the search committee she appointed, multiple sources said.

None of the sources was under the impression that more than two candidates were being interviewed by the chancellor.

That does not mean that either Cunningham or Scholl will be Lew Perkins’ successor. If the chancellor is not completely sold on either candidate, she could ask the search committee for more names, one source said.

Scholl’s name has stayed under the radar throughout the secretive search. He has worked in the athletic department for his alma mater for 21 years. In his second year as deputy AD after a promotion from senior associate AD, Scholl is involved in fundraising, marketing and ticket operations. The school’s website also detailed other duties that might have piqued the interest of the Kansas, a school looking to heighten its football profile.

His bio, in part, reads: “He works with the Irish football squad on a daily basis from an administrative standpoint, working in concert with athletics director Jack Swarbrick in that regard.”

Scholl, 53, is a 1979 graduate of Notre Dame.

Cunningham, one of the first names to surface, also graduated from Notre Dame, in 1984, and spent 15 years working for his alma mater’s athletic department, where he also received a master’s in business administration in 1988.

Before returning to his alma mater, Scholl worked five years in an advertising agency and two years raising money for the Special Olympics.

The timetable for naming a new athletic director, according to sources: when the chancellor is convinced she has found the right person for the job.

Are we really that weak of a university now that we have to go after a friggin' Deputy AD??!! And one from pompous, pretentious Notre Dame at that. Heck our football program has been better than theirs over the past few years. C'mooon! Next round of choices please. Waaaay better ones out there.

Not sure Keegan could last long in the forum world. His blogs wouldn't have any credibility. He should probably wait to post his blogs here until he reads other papers. The KC Star and WIchita Eagle have much more information to share from their sources.

How about no new AD and funnel he money into a academics scholarship fund. It seems the AD has a lot of people.

Nether of these guys has the "wow" factor we need in a new AD hire, there is no way in hell the totally inexperienced and uninterested in sports Bernadette should be left alone with the final decision on who will be our next Athletics Director.

Unnamed sources close to the cyberworld have confirmed that Tom Keegan's development as the "Bloated Blogger" will soon move the Lawrence Urinal-World sports department to seek a professional journalist to take its long unfilled sports editor position. Opinions differ on whether there are any professional journalists to be found...
