25 years ago: Well-known KU journalism professor retires

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 12, 1985:

John Bremner, KU’s Oscar S. Stauffer distinguished professor of journalism, was retiring after 17 years of teaching. A tireless champion of grammar and logic, Bremner had spent his KU career urging young journalism students to read, to think, and to be intellectually curious. Scores of students had heard him caution, “If your mother tells you she loves you, check it out.” “He would stalk behind the desks, thump the floor and bellow for answers… When a question stumped one student, he moved to the next and the next… Sometimes he went all the way around the room without getting the necessary reply, after which he would sigh, ‘My Gawd.’ If things were really bad, he’d throw open a window, wave a white handkerchief outside and yell, ‘Help, I’m surrounded by idiots.'”
