Three Bolivar, Mo., men arrested in Saturday evening robbery

December 11, 2010, 5:51 p.m. Updated December 12, 2010, 6:29 p.m.

Three men from Bolivar, Mo., were arrested and booked into Douglas County Jail on Saturday evening on charges of aggravated robbery, burglary, theft and criminal damage to property.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Dave Hubbel, an employee at the Grove Apartments, 4301 W. 24th Place, heard breaking glass about 5:30 p.m. According to the employee, three men dressed in black climbed through a window into an apartment. A few minutes later, they crawled back out carrying bags, a laptop and what the witness thought was a gun.

Hubbel said the men left the scene in a black Toyota Scion. Police arrived at the scene a few minutes later, and the employee gave them a description of the vehicle. A few minutes after police arrived, the victims of the robbery arrived home. Hubbel said police gave the residents a description of the vehicle and learned that a vehicle matching that description belonged to someone who used to live above the apartment that was robbed.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper at Baldwin Junction saw a vehicle matching the description of the one in the robbery and followed it until he could get backup because the witness reported seeing one of the individuals with a gun. Hubbel said officers pulled over the vehicle in Overbrook and arrested its occupants. Two of the men arrested were 21 years old, while the other was 19.

A pellet gun was found inside.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned in Douglas County District Court on Monday.

"OK, we got the loot! Let's GO!"

"OK, but I'm almost on 'E'. We need to stop for gas."

What kind of incompetent thief fails to fill up the gas tank before making their getaway? They need to get extra time for being dumb.

Who the hell attempts a robbery with only enough gas to get to Overbrook? Probably the worst place to gas up on you way back to Topeka... Nowhere to go except gravel roads off of Hwy 56... Wow... Fill er up- you probably had a chance...

Psst, buddy, the original story didn't contain the info about them being from MO.

They almost pulled off the perfect crime. Hit up an apartment in another state. Then drive into a rural area to hide out for a week or so. Who would look for 3 Missouri Bolivians dressed in black doing some winter camping at Pomona State Park? Except for one detail. One tiny detail. One of them wanted some Casey's doughnuts.

Bookum solved.

Highway patrol officers located the vehicle and arrested its occupants about 6:15 p.m. Officers held them in a gas station in Overbrook while they waited

---does this mean that while they held them at the gas station ... the officers pumped them for info?
