KU women fall 75-67 to Michigan for first loss of season

? Keena Mays and Monica Engelman combined for 31 points, but Michigan rallied in the second half and handed the Kansas University women’s basketball team its first loss of the season, 75-67, on Thursday night.

The loss snapped KU’s eight-game winning streak. The Jayhawks dropped to 8-1, and Michigan improved to 5-4.

Kansas jumped out quickly and actually took a 41-28 lead into halftime. The Jayhawks quickly saw their double-digit lead slip as costly turnovers allowed Michigan to go on a 9-0 run to open the second half. KU finished with 17 turnovers, to Michigan’s 12.

Mays, Engelman and Carolyn Davis finished with double-digit points for the Jayhawks.

Mays had her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Davis finished with 14 points and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds.

Engelman had 12 points in the second half to finish with a game-leading 19.

Veronica Hicks led a balanced Wolverine attack with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Jayhawks will return home to host Alabama on Sunday afternoon. Kansas will tipoff against the Crimson Tide at 2 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.
