From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 7, 1985:
- The Douglas County Register of Deeds was looking back at 1985 as a memorable year, recounting the 351 deeds filed in August alone as being the highest number she could remember. The first 11 months of 1985 showed 2,120 mortgages. Real estate agents had been just as busy as the register of deeds’ office. Interest rates in Lawrence were about 11 1/2 percent for fixed-rate mortgages and about 9 1/2 percent for adjustable-rate mortgages.
- Downtown parking meters had been “hooded” so that shoppers could enjoy free parking during December, but the parking was still limited to two hours. Several people, perhaps unaware of the limit, received tickets and complained to police. The Downtown Lawrence Assn. had begun printing up stickers warning about the time limit and putting them on meters.
