Topeka ? State and federal investigators are looking into whether a racial profiling task force and two sister committees misused public funds on elaborate trips and town hall meetings.

The Wichita Eagle reports Sunday that it reviewed expenses of the Governor’s Task Force on Racial Profiling, the Kansas African American Affairs Commission and the Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission.

Among its findings was that officials with those groups spent $10,000 on a town hall meeting featuring $1,400 in steak dinners, $3,200 in refreshments and a four-piece band. The newspaper also found that two companies were paid more than $36,000 for work on a website that never went online, and speaking fees of up to $750 an hour to address small groups.

Much of the questionable spending was in 2009.
