100 years ago: Dog-license fees net over $1,000 for Lawrence in 1910

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 6, 1910:

  • “Chief Herd and his force established a precedent this year in the matter of dog tax collections. According to his report filed with the council last night, he has made dog owners contribute $1,109 to the municipal fund since July.”
  • “There was a time in the history of our state when good fruit could be grown with little care. Injurious insects and plant diseases did small damage. But that period has passed, and the best results in horticulture can now be reached only by following the latest approved methods.”
  • “The job rooms at the World office have been turning out some unusually attractive work in the way of announcements for Christmas. The office has put in a supply of holiday borders and cuts which may be used in one or more colors, but which look particularly pleasing in red and green. The World has many pretty designs to suggest, or will work out the ideas of others in attractive form. Call 136 and ask for the job man.”
