Tune In: The Hoff tries to get his kids to stay in school

Does anyone on reality shows ever go to college? Higher education remains a dream of most young Americans, and we’re told by everyone from the president on down that training and education are the keys to America’s enduring prosperity and competitiveness. But 20-somethings on reality shows drift from party to party and one catfight to another as if in a dream.

There’s one man on this lower form of entertainment concerned about higher education, and his name is David Hasselhoff. He spends the better part of the first episode of “The Hasselhoffs: Hoff the Record” (9 p.m., A&E) trying to cajole his daughters into staying in school. He doesn’t tell them that they need to read, write, reflect and be able to think about something other than gossip, shopping or themselves. That would be a bit too much to expect. But he does worry that they’ve put all of their eggs in the potential celebrity basket and have neglected to develop a plan B. Of course neither did he, and that’s the Hoff’s dilemma.

When not worrying about the girls, Hasselhoff spends a lot of time performing as “The Hoff” and then explaining that he’s really not “The Hoff.” He’s really a 57-year-old man with bills to pay and the nagging feeling that his future is in his past.

Smart enough to be self-deprecating and gifted with a loud, smooth voice and a delivery exuding all of the sincerity of a game-show host, Hasselhoff need not worry about potential paychecks. After all, William Shatner can’t go on forever.
