National briefs: Source: Jeter, Yankees agree to deal

New York — Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees reached a preliminary agreement Saturday on a $51 million, three-year contract with an $8 million player option for 2014, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

The guaranteed portion of the contract includes a $3 million buyout if the option is declined. If it is exercised, Jeter would earn $56 million over four seasons.

Source: Gonzalez in Boston

San Diego — All-Star slugger Adrian Gonzalez was in Boston on Saturday to take a physical exam needed to complete a trade from the San Diego Padres to the Red Sox, two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

Gonzalez had surgery to clean up the labrum in his non-throwing right shoulder on Oct. 20. The Padres said then that the three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award-winning first baseman was expected to be ready for spring training.

Cardinals sign Berkman

St. Louis — The St. Louis Cardinals and free agent Lance Berkman have agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract. The 34-year-old first baseman-outfielder is a five-time NL All-Star with the Astros and last year batted .248 with Houston and the New York Yankees.

Woods stays in lead

Thousand Oaks, Calif. — Tiger Woods is one round away from ending his worst year with a familiar finish.

Woods regained control with three straight birdies early in his round, then finished with a shot that covered the flag for a tap-in birdie Saturday that gave him a 4-under 68 in the Chevron World Challenge.

Furyk wins player of the year

Thousand Oaks, Calif. — Jim Furyk was awarded a prize Saturday just as meaningful as that $10 million bonus he received from winning the FedEx Cup. He was voted by his peers as the PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Furyk was the favorite to win the award this year with his three PGA Tour victories.

Kerr aiming for history

Orlando, Fla. — Cristie Kerr is making a move to become the first American in 16 years to win LPGA player of the year, trailing leader Amy Yang by three strokes entering today’s final round of the LPGA Tour Championship.

Westwood ahead by five

Sun City, South Africa — Top-ranked Lee Westwood shot a 1-under 71 Saturday to lead by five strokes after the third round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
