100 years ago: Topeka celebrates 56th birthday

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 5, 1910:

  • “Topeka is today celebrating the fifty-sixth anniversary of its founding. At noon a celebration of old settlers was held in the First Christian church. James A. Hickey, the only survivor of the old townsite company, will attend. Lawrence was founded on Christmas day and a celebration of the fact would not be out of place this year.”
  • “‘Cherish the precious things you bring with you to college’ was the substance of the address made by Dr. Henry C. Mabie, of Boston, to the students at Vesper services in Fraser hall yesterday afternoon. The address was thoughtful and was particularly wholesome.”
  • “Judge Means performed a marriage ceremony in his office Saturday afternoon for a Kansas City couple who came to Lawrence to take advantage of the bargain prices which Cupid is offering here. It was the first of what will probably be a long list of Christmas weddings.”
  • [Advertisement] “It’s Difficult…. to pick out Christmas presents. We know this from experience. But, why not get out of the rut this time and buy something substantial, a luxury and yet a necessity – a present that will cause you to be held in grateful remembrance for years to come, a WHITE [brand] SEWING MACHINE and that a No. 30, as shown above. We’ll accept a small cash payment down, and hold the machine for delivery at Christmas. Please feel free to call upon us at any time. Evans Metcalf Co., 924-26 Mass. St.”
