25 years ago: State turns down Montana’s offer of grizzly bears

The State of Montana had recently requested to send some of its grizzly bears to Kansas, but the Kansas Fish and Game Commission turned them down, claiming that the state already had an overabundance of the bears, who went by a different name here. “We call them state legislators,” wrote the fish and game director. “They are unpredictable, can be vicious, are occasionally short-sighted, make terrible pets, but are generally not too destructive on our environment if handled carefully.”

The Kansas-Hawaii football game was not scheduled to be televised, but it would be carried by KLZR-FM through the Kansas network. The kickoff was set for 7:30 Honolulu time, but with the five-hour difference, faithful Jayhawk fans would be tuning in at half past midnight and staying glued to their radios until approximately 3:30 a.m.
