40 years ago: 13-year-old girl accosted while walking home from South Junior High

The Acting Director of Bands at Kansas University reported that the marching band was still 15 members short of the 135 needed before the first home game performance on September 12. As had been reported earlier [see OHT for August 24, 1970], the band’s auditions were being opened up to women for the first time in the band’s history, but so far, no women had applied for a position.

Police reported that a 13-year-old girl who had been walking home from South Junior High was accosted by a man who attempted to entice the girl into his late-model pickup. The incident occurred on the second day of school. There were also reports of “prowlers” in the vicinity of Lawrence High School, but the two persons reported there had disappeared before police arrived.
