25 years ago: Change to city’s weed ordinance considered

Lawrence City Commissioners were considering a change to the city’s weed ordinance. Under the new ordinance, about 70 plants would be specified by name, making enforcement easier. The ordinance would still only apply to plants over a foot tall, and then was still unlikely to be invoked unless a neighbor complained.

Area lakes were expecting a busy Labor Day weekend as weather forecasts looked favorable. However, elsewhere in the nation, Hurricane Elena’s unpredictable movements were causing officials in Louisiana and the Florida panhandle to order massive evacuations of the area.

As part of the IBM Faculty Loan Program, two IBM employees had taken leave to teach at Haskell Indian Junior College during the fall semester. One IBM employee was teaching five sections of an introductory computer class, and the other was teaching data processing.
