Topeka ? Workshops on the state’s new $8.2 billion transportation program have been well-attended, officials say.

Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Deb Miller said the weak economy may have spurred more interest among local groups trying to land public works projects.

“Everybody is looking for an edge. A down economy adds urgency,” Miller said.

The workshops are designed to give communities information to help them as the process continues in selecting projects under the new transportation plan, which is called T-WORKS.

“As we move closer to selecting projects that will be constructed under T-WORKS, it’s critical that we continue discussions with Kansas communities and transportation stakeholders so that we can make the most of our transportation funds by stretching the dollars as far as possible,” Miller said.

Workshops were last week in Wichita and Dodge City. Two will take place next week: Wednesday in Olathe and Thursday in Pittsburg. A webinar will be Sept. 7.
